About my taste in movies
I think
of myself as fairly picky when it comes to movies. I'm a fan of good direction, writing, and cinematography first and foremost, which typically means that the first thing I look for in a film is who directs it, and/or its visual style. With very few exceptions, I don't follow specific actors, and 90% of "Big Hollywood" movies are completely unappealing dreck to me. I rarely get to the theatres, since very few movies overall interest me, let alone the insane price of tickets; I'll usually wait until the DVD is out and enjoy it on my home theatre system, which has the advantage of no screaming children or annoying people yammering away on their cell phones or sticky floors. Ew.
After directing, genre is my next deciding factor. I'm pretty open minded when it comes to what kind of movies I'll watch. I do, however, avoid pointless big-budget action movies like the plague. Same for those military propaganda ones. I'm not really into horror movies either. My favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy, and drama. And smart comedy, not that PG-13 'teen movie' garbage.

Directors
 |
Steven Spielberg
I'd say that overall, he is my favorite director. This is mostly due to Close Encounters of the Third Kind becoming my all-time favorite movie when I was a kid some twenty or so years ago, and no movie surpassing it since. He has a way of telling a story that never fails to astound me. I still haven't seen all of his movies, though...
Favorite Spielberg movies: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War of the Worlds, Jurassic Park

|
Tim Burton
The only films of his that I haven't seen in full as I type this are Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Batman Returns. Tim Burton has a style all his own, and it's one of my favorites. Quirky and weird at times, I couldn't ask for more. When he teams up with Johnny Depp, you've usually got a winner of a film on your hands!
Favorite Burton movies: Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow
|
|
Alfonso Cuarón
I can thank Harry Potter for introducing him into my roster of favorite directors. Since seeing his wonderful adaptation of the third book in that series, I've found another director with an amazing sense of style to add among my favorites.
Favorite Cuarón movies: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men, A Little Princess

|
Jim Henson
Muppets? Check. Fantasy? Check. Jim Henson was a genius, plain and simple.
Favorite Henson movies: Labyrinth, anything Muppets

Composers
 |
John Williams
Name any memorable film score. Chances are, it's John Williams. The master needs no explanation. From the majestic to the poignant to the scary, he can do it all. Steven Spielberg's right hand man, and also the one who gave Star Wars its unforgettable musical backdrop.
Favorite Williams scores: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, Star Wars, Harry Potter |
|
Danny Elfman
Spielberg has Williams; Burton has Elfman. His scores can be as quirky as Burton's films are visually, but he can also do much more when the occasion calls for it.
Favorite Elfman scores: Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Big Fish, Charlotte's Web
|
Actors
 |
Dakota Fanning
She may only be fourteen, but her acting skill is on par with many actors twice her age. I first became aware of her as 'that girl with the blazing blue eyes' from the SciFi Channel miniseries Taken, though I wouldn't even see that until a few years later, after I had seen some of her movies first. I believe she is capable of transitioning to adulthood in her career successfully, much like Jodie Foster before her.
Favorite Fanning performances: Dreamer, War of the Worlds, Taken (miniseries), Uptown Girls, Man on Fire, i am sam, Charlotte's Web |
|
Johnny Depp
There's nothing quite like an actor who takes their work seriously and plays by their own rules. It also helps when they have a bizarre sense of humor and style. Many of his best performances are found when he works with fellow oddball Tim Burton.
Favorite Depp performances: Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
|
 |
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster is easily one of her generation's greatest actors. She successfully transitioned from childhood to adulthood in her acting career, a feat which is deserving of much respect. And yeah, I know... I still haven't seen Taxi Driver or Silence of the Lambs yet. There's a lot of her films I've yet to see.
Favorite Foster performances: Contact, Panic Room, Flightplan, Napoleon and Samantha

 |
Ewan McGregor
I will fully admit that his portrayal as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episodes I through III is the main reason that he impressed me. What I've seen of his work outside of Star Wars was pretty good too. The Force is with him.
Favorite McGregor performances: Star Wars Episodes I - III, Moulin Rouge, Big Fish |
